The 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America has begun with a bang for Group A contenders, as co-hosts Mexico and Asian powerhouse South Korea each secured crucial wins in their opening fixtures. Mexico currently sits atop the group standings, thanks to a superior goal difference after their home triumph.
Mexico celebrated a significant milestone at the iconic Azteca Stadium, defeating South Africa 2-0. This marked their first victory in a World Cup opening match in 28 years, much to the delight of the home crowd. Julian Quinones opened the scoring, capitalizing on a defensive error, before Raul Jimenez sealed the win with a header in the second half. The match, however, was not without drama, as three red cards were issued; South Africa saw Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane dismissed, while Mexico's Cesar Montes also received his marching orders late in the game.
South Korea's Comeback Thriller
Meanwhile, the action shifted to Guadalajara Stadium, where South Korea staged an impressive comeback against Czechia. Despite dominating much of the play, the Koreans found themselves trailing when Czech captain Ladislav Krejci headed in a goal in the 59th minute. Undeterred, Hwang In-Beom quickly equalized eight minutes later, and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu completed the turnaround with the winning goal in the 80th minute, securing a 2-1 victory. A disallowed goal for offside against Tomas Soucek shortly before South Korea's decisive strike added to the tension.
With these results, Mexico leads Group A ahead of South Korea on goal difference. The two winning nations are now set to face each other in their next fixture, promising an exciting clash, while South Africa will look to bounce back against Czechia in the second round of group stage matches.
