1986 World Cup

Argentina won the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, beating West Germany 3–2 in the final at the Estadio Azteca. The tournament belonged to Diego Maradona, whose performances are among the greatest by any single player.

Maradona's quarter-final

Against England, Maradona scored both of football's most famous goals minutes apart: the illegal 'Hand of God' and the 'Goal of the Century', a solo run past half the England team. He then set up the winner in the final to cap a complete tournament.

Mexico steps in

Mexico hosted at short notice after Colombia withdrew, becoming the first nation to stage two World Cups (after 1970). Mexico co-hosts again in 2026—see /world-cup-2026 for the venues and schedule.

Top scorer and legacy

England's Gary Lineker won the Golden Boot with six goals. The title was Argentina's second of three; the full set is on /world-cup-winners-list and the scoring records on /world-cup-top-goalscorers.
