How the expanded knockout stage works

Why this bracket differs from past tournaments
Unlike 2022’s clean 16-team knockout, 2026’s bracket has quirks: some Round of 32 winners get extra rest before the last 16. The final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium could feature a team that played seven matches in five weeks — a brutal test of depth in North American summer heat.
