As the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, New York City is gearing up to celebrate the global football spectacle with a unique initiative designed to engage its passionate residents. The city has announced plans to open five public park fields for free, organized overnight pickup soccer, ensuring that the spirit of the tournament extends well beyond the official match schedules.
This program, dubbed NYC Open Play, will provide dedicated spaces in each of the five boroughs where New Yorkers can participate in drop-in football sessions. Each location will feature multiple 7-a-side pitches, complete with all necessary equipment like goals, cones, and soccer balls. To facilitate smooth play and ensure a welcoming environment, the fields will be well-lit, staffed, and managed by the NYC Footy league, which will help organize teams and rotate players.
The initiative aims to make it easier for residents to enjoy a game at any hour, with sessions potentially running from late evening until early morning. Further enhancing the experience, New York City FC, in collaboration with its nonprofit foundation City in the Community (CITC), will support operations at one field each weekend. This support includes offering free clinics, brand partner giveaways, and community programming led by professional coaches, fostering a deeper connection to the sport during the month-long tournament.
