The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, kicked off with a historic moment for the host nation. Seventeen-year-old attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora made his debut for Mexico's national team, El Tri, in their opening match against South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca. His appearance marks him as the youngest player ever to don the national jersey in a Men's World Cup, a significant milestone for the burgeoning talent.
Mora, who wasn't even born when Mexico last advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup in 1986, entered the fray as a second-half substitute, replacing Alvaro Fidaldo. His introduction came during a commanding performance by Mexico, who secured a 2-0 victory over South Africa. Shortly after Mora stepped onto the pitch, Raul Jimenez extended Mexico's lead with a header, adding to Julian Quinones's earlier goal.
The match itself was notable for more than just Mora's record-breaking appearance. It also saw three red cards issued, a first for a FIFA World Cup opening fixture, adding a chaotic element to the 90 minutes. South Africa's Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off, contributing to a dramatic start to the tournament which will feature an expanded 48 teams across 16 venues throughout June and July 2026.
