Canada kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey today at BMO Field Stadium, facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in their highly anticipated opener. However, the team took to the pitch without one of their most influential players, Alphonso Davies, who was sidelined due to injury.
The Bayern Munich standout sustained a left hamstring injury back in May during a UEFA Champions League fixture between his German club and Paris Saint-Germain, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. This setback has prevented him from featuring in the starting lineup for Canada's crucial first match on home soil.
Positive Recovery Outlook
Despite Davies' absence, national team coach Jesse Marsch offered a hopeful update on the defender's recovery. Speaking to reporters ahead of the game, Marsch indicated that recent medical assessments were very encouraging. "We did an MRI yesterday. It showed very positive signs that he’s healing incredibly well, almost completely," Marsch stated, adding that the team is preparing to intensify Davies' rehabilitation. The coach praised Davies' consistent ability to bounce back from muscle injuries and expressed optimism that he could contribute to the squad again in the near future.
Davies, 25, has faced a challenging period with injuries in recent seasons, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament in March 2025 and a muscle fibre tear in February 2026. His current hamstring issue marks another hurdle, but the team hopes for a quick return as Canada navigates its Group B schedule, which also includes matches against Switzerland and Qatar, in the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
