Spain's highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign has kicked off in Atlanta, but young prodigy Lamine Yamal will not feature in the starting XI for their Group H opener against tournament debutants Cape Verde. The 18-year-old winger, a key figure for his club, was confirmed to be among the substitutes when La Roja's official lineup was announced for the match on Monday, June 15th.
The decision stems from a hamstring injury Yamal sustained in April, which prematurely ended his club season. While the injury had initially raised concerns about his availability for the global tournament hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente had previously allayed fears regarding the youngster's overall fitness.
Ahead of the crucial fixture, de la Fuente confirmed that while Yamal was not deemed ready to start, he was in excellent condition and could potentially play a role later in the game. "He is available but not to start the game. He is in perfect condition to play some minutes," the coach stated, indicating that fans might still see the talented attacker make an impact off the bench as Spain, the reigning European champions and 2010 World Cup winners, begin their quest for a second global title.
