Ghana's national team faces an early setback in their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign as key midfielder Thomas Partey has been denied entry into Canada, making him unavailable for their first group stage fixture. The Black Stars are scheduled to kick off their tournament against Panama in Toronto, one of the host cities for the expanded 48-team global spectacle.
The Canadian government's decision to refuse Partey's visa application stems from ongoing legal issues involving the 32-year-old. Partey, currently a player for Spanish club Villarreal and formerly with Arsenal, is facing multiple charges of rape and sexual assault. These allegations, made by four different women, span the period between 2020 and 2022, with his trial expected to commence next year. He has consistently pleaded not guilty to all seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault.
FIFA, world football's governing body, has acknowledged the situation, confirming that Partey will not be able to join his teammates from Ghana's training base in Boston. In a statement, FIFA clarified its position, emphasizing that it does not intervene in the immigration procedures of host nations. The organization reiterated that the ultimate authority for granting visas and admitting individuals into a country rests solely with the host government, underscoring the independent nature of such decisions.
