1966 and the Eusébio show
Portugal’s lone World Cup podium came in England 1966, powered by Eusébio’s nine goals — still the tournament’s Golden Boot record for a Portuguese player. They beat Hungary 3-1, Brazil 3-1, and North Korea 5-3 (after being down 0-3) before losing 1-2 to eventual winners England in the semifinal. The third-place playoff win over the Soviet Union (2-1) remains their last knockout victory outside Europe.
The 2006–2022 cycle: Ronaldo’s near-misses
Portugal reached four straight World Cups from 2006–2022 but never surpassed the semifinals. The 2006 team, featuring a 21-year-old Ronaldo, lost 0-1 to France in the last four. In 2018, they were knocked out by Uruguay in the Round of 16. Qatar 2022 saw a benched Ronaldo as Gonçalo Ramos’ hat-trick crushed Switzerland 6-1, only for Morocco to eliminate them 0-1 in the quarterfinals.
2026 qualifying: A generational shift
Drawn in UEFA Group J with Bosnia, Iceland, Luxembourg, Slovakia, and Liechtenstein, Portugal are heavy favorites. Roberto Martínez has phased out veterans like Pepe while integrating João Neves (19) and António Silva (20). Ronaldo, who will be 41 in 2026, remains in the squad but faces competition from Ramos and Leão. Their first qualifier is September 2025 — track their path on our /world-cup-qualifiers page.
